Deactivate a firearm

We are often asked to deactivate firearms for various reasons, the main reason seems to be so the firearm can become a "wall hanger".

Because there is nothing in legislation yet on what constitutes as a deactivated firearm, in order for us to deactivate a firearm in NZ, we require written approval by email from FSA (Firearms Safety Authority) 0800 844 431, describing (in writing) how FSA would like us to deactivate the firearm to their standards, where the firearm will then be recognised as "deactivated".  The most likely method is to cut the firearm in half (top to bottom/muzzle to butt) and to hand the bolt (if the rifle has one) to NZ Police.  The cost to do this is based on time and we charge at $90 + GST per hour.

Without this written approval, we are unable to deactivate a firearm until legislation has changed.
