40gn Hornady V-max at 4100fps from a Kimber 20 Tac meets pigeon.......spectacular!!!

6.5 x 39mm ................................ (the simple wildcat)

Pics below of an AR15 chambered in 6.5x39, with frankinmag fitted, also a spare fluted barrel.

6.5x39 is made by passing 7.62x39 brass through a FL sizing die once. Body taper and shoulder angle remain as the Russians designed it. There are two advantgaes with this, firstly any rifle of magazine designed to feed the Russian round feeds perfectly, and second, Milsurp 7.62x39 ammo can be pulled, resized with the powder charge still in place and then an 85gn HP seated and you have a good shootable cartridge that is easy to make, and who cares about the brass when it goes over the side.

Here are some random velocities and loads that we have played around with to give an idea of speeds etc.
AR2206/26gn/95 Vmax 2461fps
AR2206/28gn/95 Vmax 2712fps
BM2/26gn/95 Vmax 2557fps
BM2/27gn/95 Vmax 2664fps
BM2/28gn/95 Vmax 2707fps
748/29gn/95 Vmax 2516fps
748/31gn/95 Vmax 2700fps
AR2208/28gn/95 Vmax 2507fps
H4198/24.5gn/95 Vmax 2760fps
H4198/26gn/95 Vmax 2860fps
AR2207/24.5gn/95 Vmax 2780fps
AR2207/26gn/95 Vmax 2840fps
AR2219/28gn/100HP 2585
AR2219/29gn/100HP 2780

For AR15, CProducts are just about to release a stainless steel mag in 7.62x39, which will be perfect for this wildcat, and of course you can always have a spare barrel in 7.62x39 as once the bolt head is opened out it will fit both cartridges perfectly.

For a bolt action I think a CZ527 with a 12oz summit stock and one of our enclosed barrel suppressors would be hard to bet, with about 250 Savage type performance. You know it makes sense!!!!

The 303 lee Enfield rifles and some not often seen varients

Commonwealth countries spent near on a century armed with various versions on the Lee rifle,
From the 8 shot Black powder 215gn bullet firing Magazine Lee Metford (MLM) adopted in 1888-9 or thereabouts, to the L42A1 Sniper rifle used in the Falkland Island biffo in 1982. Other countries such as Kenya continue to use it for Park staff etc

Below are a few pics of some varients that have migrated to our workshop in recent times and have some interesting aspects. The NZ marked SMLE MkI (don't ever call them No1 MkIs if you don't want to be mistaken for a tyro collector!)
The top one in sporterised condition has no factory serial numbers, only the bizzare 1-1 stamp on both rear reciever ledge and the bolt, very strange, bet there is a story with that one, otherwise has NZ rack number and contact date.
The sporter, Lee Speed type has a cocking piece mounted apreture sight, fast to use, and of course gets clear of your eye as soon as the trigger is pulled.
The L.R Tippens target type rifle is interesting, LR Tippins was a famous target shooter at Bisley etc, in the 1900s and (according to Reynolds LE book) was very vocal in his opposition to the adoption of the SMLE, can't have worried him to much as he built this rifle on a SMLE pattern, has his name on the left side of the reciever and sight is his patent by the look of it.

Anyway, I thought they were interesting!

HECKLER AND KOCH

Something for the HK enthusiasts out there, an SL-8 with the barrel out, showing the lug seating area, and the breeching flange on the barrel which the barrel nut bears against, we had this out for threading for a suppressor, but were interested in whether we could seat the barrel back and rechamber with our usual .223 reamer so as to get rid of the god-awful HK deep throat which gives way too much 'jump' for real accuracy work, long seated rounds obviously shoot well, but a $2000 single loader is a bit much to take!

BLOW UP

With the Roar (NZ trophy deer hunting season) coming up, it is timely to have your rifle checked over by your gunsmith. In recent times we have been startled to find faults with seemingly serviceable rifles, so never take it for granted that your rifle will be in a safe condition for ever! wear happens, pics show a Sako 7mm Rem mag with its barrel split (serial number outside the recall range), a Mauser m96 6.5x55 that the locking lugs simply sheared off on a fairly normal cartridge, and a 7.62 target rifle showing cracks staring to occur on the base of both locking lugs (well done to gunsmith Harvey Westland for spotting that one)

Remember, you are pulling the tittie on 50,000 plus PSI when you let a round go, why take chances when a headspace check, lug contact test, borescope of the throat and crack test of the bolt body cost bugger all!.

A mate of mine had the bolt on his sporting rifle exit the action, went through his cheek below the eye and exited on the right side of his neck, was found 40 yards from the firing point (minus the bolt handle), he spent considerable time in IC as a result. he still shoots, but reckoned it took him a while to get rid of the flinch!!.............don't let that be you!
