Christchurch based hunters looking for a guy to process your venison or what have you, should give Noel a call. We have recently fitted a suppressor to his .243 for his "Home Kill" operation, and he dropped in some salami and patties. The gunsmiths and various "hanger ons" at Gunworks gave them a good sampling at the end of week beer session and pronounced them very good indeed! (Tell him we sent you, and he might drop us off some more great salami!!)
CANTERBURY HOME KILL SERVICES
We can highly recommend (first hand) Noel Womersley, Canterbury Home Kill Services for excellent, tasty meat.

Pics from the workshop this week show a CZ 550 Magnum undergoing conversion from .375 H&H to .338 Lapua Magnum. Barrel is the excellant Trueflite ultra match at 28", bolt face altered, ejection port cut back (in fact this is a minor defect with the CZ action, and probably should be done to all 550s as it does affect positive ejection of the spent case.
Devcon bedding getting trimmed in the mill. Devcon is an expensive compound, but from seeing its reliability in sniper rifles over the years convinces me that it is very hard to beat in adverse condition.
Muzzle brake is our 2 port directional Tiger II which we find very effective, there is plenty of bollocks talked about muzzle brakes (such as the quiet muzzle brake..WTF?), but next time you see a Main Battle Tank (MBT) rumble past have a look at whats on the end of the main armament, a two port directional will be in place because tank turret rings, bearings and suspension have to have the firing load reduced as much as possible, and most tanks are firing projectiles at over 5000fps!
NEW MODEL.......Light weight Alpine rifle sound suppressor
After two years of extensive testing we can now offer our Light Alpine duralium sound suppressor for cartridges up to 65gn powder capacity, ie 243, 308, 270, 30-06 etc.
Weight is 350-380gms or 13 oz which is exceptionally light for an overbarrel suppressor capable of containing that powder charge.
We are air freighting wpn grade Duralium from California for this project, as we can't source what we require locally.
We have always wanted to create a true light weight suppressor for South Island alpine conditions, where weight really is a serious consideration, but have not been happy with the usual grades of aluminuim for this task, early experiments showed the problem of stretching and bulging over would occur after a number of rounds.
Duralium gives the tube a similar strength to mild steel but without the weight, titanium is also an option, but too heavy for us, being half way between steel and aluminium.
Additional tweaking of the internals are also required to achieve our weight limit and to provide the ledgendary GUNWORKS sound reduction. Cost is an additional $NZ100 plus gst (it bloody near costs us that just for the piece of tube!) but hey, thats the price we pay to be the NZ market leaders in rifle sound suppressor manufacture.
Hit the "contact gunworks" button on the top of the page to get a price and details of how to get you rifle to us for your lightest and strongest suppressor to hit the NZ market!
Need a barrel to cut the locking piece off and thread a .30-221 1:8 twist barrel into, and then suppress. Anybody see any worn, burnt out or rusty bore Blaser R93 barrels (any calibre) for sale?
Thanks
Robbie
last year I started using the 17HMR for rabbits in North Canterbury farms, a converted Ruger 10/22 magnum with a 17 barrel, heavy bolt handle and delrin buffer. I was intially sceptical of this cartridge, but using it turned me around to the benefits of the 17, low report (with suppressor obviously) and low ricochet danger.
I did feel the 17 HMR didn't shoot as far as I needed, so built up a 17 Rem on an AR15. I am not a fan of long rifles (or loud ones), and a suppressor always adds length, so the only option (short of rebarrelling a Steyr AUG!) was a shortish barrel on the AR.
I took this opportunity to quickly test three loads with (slow powder and fast powder) with long and short versions of the same barrel, so the data I have here may be of interest to someone doing something similar. Bullet is a 25gn Vmax
So briefly.......
Load ...............27"barrel average.............16"barrel average..........Vel loss
24gn AR2208.............3840................................3457........................383
24gn 748..................3919................................3564........................355
20gn AR2207..............3918................................3634........................284
Accuracy was best with the fast burning AR2207 in both short and long barrels, so will be sticking with that.
Pics below show the semi finished set up (still have to flute the barrel), with suppressor fitted, and the dismantled pic shows the off cut of the Walther barrel.
