.20 Practical = 20/223 Rem: The simple .20!!

Over the last month or 2 we have been barrelling up the odd 20 Practical, sometime new barrel and some rechambers of .204 Ruger.

Why?

The .20 Practical is simply a necked down .223 Rem which makes for a very simple and economical wildcat with trajectory like a 22/250 or better with much less powder, better barrel life, better projectile break up for varmiting, and better sound suppression because of the smaller bullet (fired through Gunworks suppressors of course!)

Below is a couple of groups fired by PB of Chch from a CZ527 (ex .223) with an excellant Trueflite Ultra Match barrel at light varmit weight 1:10, 22" long, chamber PTG floating pilot reamer.

32gn Vmax at about 4000fps, three shot groups .286" and .257". Thats with no load development with that bullet. Nothing fired out of it has gone bigger the 1/2".

Needless to say customer is very impressed with the performance of this round/barrel combo, and reckons it sounds like a .22 rimfire going off.

We have a couple of AR varmit rifles coming down for barrels at the end of the month, and given the way they toss brass into the undergrowth, this is the ideal case/calibre. Think I may even consider selling my AR15 17 Rem barrel for that reason, .17 Rem brass is a $1 a shot or more, and often the last time you see it is when you put it in the mag!

Not something you see everyday, a BSA Hunter .222 with a German manufactured sleeve partially fitted. Apparently a lot of German rebarrels involve drillings and single shots etc where it is not paractical to completely rebarrel the rifle because of ribs, scope mounts, engraving, wooden oak leaves, iron sights and cookcoo clock thingies that spring out of parts of the barrel at morning tea time!, anyway sleeving allows the owner to keep everything intact and refresh the rifling for around $400 plus gst, twist rates seem limted to 1:14 which makes it a 22 Hornet or .222 Rem only. Worth a look....

BSA & 220 Long Rifle

Bit of an interesting job here. Fitting BSA International .22 target rifle barrels to an MLE Long Lee Enfield and a No4 Lee Enfield Rifle, one in .22 and the other in .22 magnum, bolt faces correct for rimfire obviously. Left the original contour, makes for an accurate shooter, an interesting project.....

510 Whisper

.50 Whispery type round, built on the excellant CZ550 Magnum action, the bolt face is correct for the .338 Lapua based wildcat.

Gunworks suppressor optimised for large projetile flight, where even recoil of the rifle while the projectile is still inside the suppressor have to be considered. ( heavy rifle bullets, like heavy pistol bulles can start the rifle recoiling while the projectile is still in the bore)

At the bottom is some pics of various heavy .50 cal bullets, some specifically made for subsonic expansion.
